Kol Israel Women's summer Event

On Wednesday, August 6th over 40 women of our community gathered together for  an inspirational and educational day.  Our host Lisa Grazi welcomed us graciously to her home to spend the afternoon with our very own Vicky Harari.  We were treated to a beautiful gourmet lunch, an educational workshop, and a relaxing afternoon at the pool.  As always, Vicky gave an insightful and thought provoking workshop.  Some of the topics Vicky focused on included mindfulness, modesty in dress and talk, appreciation, and thankfulness.  She provided us with tools to use and left us with many inspiring suggestions for our personal and family's growth.  The discussion that followed provided us with even more insights into our roles as Jewish women.  The Kol Israel women who attended all benefited from this very worthwhile afternoon in Deal New Jersey.   We look forward to continuing our women's events back home in Brooklyn.

The Kol  Israel Book Club has been an active, vital part of our congregation for many years;  always well attended and greatly anticipated.  In the recent past, our book club has gained popularity among community people, reaching beyond area congregants.

Our first book club of the season was graciously hosted by Mrs. Linda Khezrie.  It was the largest and most well attended event to this day.  Mrs. Khezrie, always the lady, warmly greeted each guest with her winning smile.  As over 40 women were treated to a delicious and beautifully prepared lunch, the topic of discussion was the book A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Husseini.

Our guest speaker, Esther Hidary, led us through an interesting, detailed history of the Afghan region as well as an overview of the story.  Lively debates on topics relevant to the book ensued.  This provided many exchanges and insights among the women who were of varying ages.  We thank Mrs. Linda Khezrie for hosting such a memorable event.

The following book club event  was held at he home of Lisa Grazi.  Lisa provided a respite to a bleak, messy, snowy day.  Lisa is known  for her culinary talents and her guests were fortunate to partake in her wonderfully prepared lunch.

Our recurring speaker, Dierdre Eisenstein moderated the classic, The Painted Veil, by W. Somerset Maugham.  The discussion covered women’s feelings on love, adultery, guilt and compassion in desperate situations.  As always, the attendees voiced opinions and stirred conversation.

The Time Traveler’s Wife by Audrey Niffenegger was the subject of our next book club.  It is an unusual story written in a complex style.  Our speaker was our very own Yael Harari, daughter of Rabbi and Vicky Harari.  This was Yael’s first time moderating the Kol Israel Book Club.

Yael did a wonderful job of deconstructing the plot and clarifying the intricate theme.  We were all enlightened by her take on the book and her command of the group.  We hope she will find the time to speak at future events as we were thoroughly impressed by her ability.

We are all looking forward to upcoming book club events.  Thanks to all who have been involved and we would love to see new faces and hear suggestions for future books.
