Family Shabbaton

On November 3, 2007/22 Cheshvan 5768, Kol Israel Congregation celebrated a beautiful Shabbat. Our guest speaker for Shabbat was Richard Joel, president of Yeshiva University. We were honored to have President Joel kick off our Shabbat on Friday night when he spoke to our youth. At least 40 High School and college age youth came together for an Oneg Shabbat at the home of Betty and Michael Fallas. President Joel spoke about education and the importance of learning and how important community is to all of us. Our youth seemed to love his enthusiasm, and when he finished they couldn’t wait to get his attention just to ask him a multitude of questions about their future and of course what Yeshiva University has to offer.

Shabbat morning after prayers, our congregation walked over to East Midwood for a beautiful Shabbat lunch. This was our fourth annual Shabbaton, and in planning it we just hoped for at least  200 people so the room wouldn’t look so empty. However, once again we were more than surprised, when 400 of our members came together for lunch, singing  and a great lecture!  Rabbi Besser led everyone in singing beautiful Shabbat songs .  Our guest speaker President Joel was so much more than a speaker. He told stories, had his audience amused and was just a great delight to spend Shabbot with.

This Shabbaton was really special. Our congregation proved once again that getting together for Shabbats, and other special events is what we want to do. We truly enjoyed ourselves and look forward to future Shabbatons. Thank you to our Women’s Committee for always being optimistic and wanting the best for our congregation. A special thank you to Rabbi Harari for always giving us positive advice and for giving us the motivation to keep our beautiful congregation together.
